This is continuing a thread of two weeks ago. I went to a lecture on the
Manorial Documents Register today . Of particular note is that the Manorial
Documents Register website now covers manorial rolls for Hampshire, Isle of
Wight, Norfolk, Surrey, Middlesex and the three Ridings of Yorkshire; and
all of Wales. (previously I think it only covered two counties when I last
searched)
http://www.mdr.nationalarchives.gov.uk/mdr/

The database is designed to enable you to search by parish to find out what
manorial documents you are likely to find covering it. The enquiry system
is still being improved as there are one or two quirks in it (eg using the
date field is not effective at excluding dates from outside of the period,
although it does seem to reduce the number of hits; also it is inconsistent
on alternative names for the manors, the use of parish names, and even as to
whether these are the ancient or modern names). Even with all of this it is
still an assistance, and has already helped me. The definitions of some of
the terms that you will come across in respect to manorial documents was
very useful.

When you find a set of manorial records, it tells you which archives holds
them. At that point you are best off printing out the details and then
switching to the local archive's or A2A website in the hope that they
provide more information, and if you are really lucky, a calendar.

If you are looking for manorial records from outside of these counties (eg
Suffolk) then there seems to be no choice but to go to Kew for the register,
or just try your luck in searching the local archives.

Quite by coincidence, I have just had a notice of this on another list.
Looks as if a decent database is nearly here:
