Subject: ADMIN. POST - Mail Delivery Problems - Periodic Review
Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2005 18:36:53 -0600

Folks,

given the increasing seriousness of ISPs NOT delivering list mail for
not-very-good reasons, I'm giving the list a review every week or so of
the extent of the problem on a more consistent basis. I'm hoping this
will do two things:

1. increase the degree by which subscribers do NOT miss mail (by
accessing the list archives for missed mail); and

2. illustrate which ISPs are more prone to delivery issues from
time-to-time than others.

These statistics ONLY deal with ISP delivery problems, NOT with
individual subscriber's bounces because, for example, your mailbox was
full or your address is non-existent (e.g., because you've changed it).

Those of you affected by missed mail, EITHER "list" mode OR "digest"
mode, might wish to consult the list archives for any posts you missed, at:

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/SUFFOLK

So, for the period commencing 24 Jan until today:

This ISP Bounced Posts To Subscribers Mode

ao.net 1 1 D
internode.on.net 1 1 L
massnet1.net 1 1 D
optusnet.com.au 1 1 L
peterboro.net 1 1 D
southcom.com.au 3 1 D
sympatico.ca 1 1 L
virgin.net 4 8 L
webaxs.net 3 1 D

SUMMARY: transient problems with some of the Australian ISPs again;
@virgin.net had problems that affected all RootsWeb lists for a couple
of days ...

The following new notices are from the Helpdesk at

http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ :

"Mail Lists: 2005-01-29

"The mailing list server LISTS3 has been off-line for maintenance and
though it is currently operational, we may again need to take it
off-line again . This is our smallest of our list servers and hence the
number of lists affected is quite small. Est. downtime: 3 day(s)"

Additionally, as I've mentioned before, if you have any questions about

whether or not you're receiving list mail, please feel free to contact
me directly at any time, or check the RootsWeb Helpdesk messages at:

http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ .

If you have any questions about whether or not you're still subscribed,
you can always check:

http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/

Thanks.
