>Hugh, Good idea!!! Let me add my piece by quoting from several emails that
I have either written or received. Before I do that, please let me make a
correction for a mistake for which I am responsible. First. The Hampton
Sullivan that was the son of Isaac1 Sullivan (of Northampton, Bladen,
Robeson & Cumberland Counties) and Mary Mondal I shall henceforth refer to
as Hampton1, just as I refer to his father as Isaac1. Hampton1 was born in
Robeson County. Period, once and for all. I disseminated the information
that he was born in Duplin County. He was NOT!!! It was my error and it
has been propogated. Everyone... please correct that. Hampton1 was born 20
April 1811 in Robeston County and died 1 March 1852 in Duplin County. He
married Elizabeth McIntire on 19 January 1832 and was a merchant, died with
a large estate, served in the House of Commons and so on.
>
>Indeed I have a family Bible with most of the dates on Isaac1, his wife and
children. The Bible belonged to Hampton1's grand-daughter. It is very
fragile now and in my possession. I am about to place that and other
photographs and information in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC.
>
>Now, about the Hamptons. Shanna posted a note to the Sullivan List on Feb
11, 1998 in which she was attempting to sort the Hampton Sullivans. She
numbered them 1 thru 9. I answered her on each one of them. First I will
repeat her enumeration and her question then I will give my answer (for what
it is worth)!
>1)(Shanna) Hampton Sullivan, born bef. 1765 of Darlington, SC.
> (Jerry). I don't know, I wish I did.... It may turn out to be
something ... I've been looking at that guy for some time. In the DAR
Patriot Library, I found the following fragment. Sorry I don't have more:
> "...after correction, gave Hampton Sullivant's birth date as prior
to 1756. His deathdate was given as prior to 3-24-1794, his marriage date
as prior to 1778... In Exhibit 6-B which accompanied my application on the
service of William Flowers, you will note that the settlement of the lands
of Hampton Sullivant was made August 15, 1809.... I believer Hampton
Sullivant had sohns that were not named in this settlement. Or he had a
brother with a son named Hampton Sullivant...."!!!!!
> (addendum) At the moment, I cannot tie him to any Sullivan in North
Carolina but it's something I'm not finished with.
>2)(Shanna) Hampton Sullivan Sr., born 1766, North Carolina; died 1812,
Duplin, North Carolina; son of John Sullivan Sr., and Agga or Martha Ford;
Spouses Elizabeth; Prudence Taylor; notes: 1782 in Brunswick Co., N.C. 1800
& 1806 in Duplin Co., NC. IGI lists his mother as Mrs. Martha Sullivan.
Duplin County Court Records: Hampton Sulliven was charged with a :bastard
child on Prudence Taylor" in 1794.
> (Jerry' answer) You seem to have the information correct on this
Hampton. I have not seen any marriage bonds for him and Prudence tho'. He
musta' been a rascal. I do think that he was somehow connected with my
Isaac1. Not sure how, tho'.
> (addendum) The name Martha adds to my suspicions. Hampton1 had a
daughter named Martha but I also found a Martha Sullivan (a school girl) who
died later. Although I accepted the information Shanna wrote, I am not
entirely sure the references she gives is for the same person. To
complicate matters, there may have been several Hamptons runnin' around in
Eastern North Carolina during that time period.
>3)(Shanna) Hampton Sullivan, born 1771, of Duplin, North CArolina; son of
John Sullivan and Martha; [possibly the same Hampton as #2]
> (Jerry's answer) I think, as you do, this one is the same as #2.
> (addendum) I think he was one of the ones I referred to above in #2.
>4) Hampton Sullivan, born abt. 1797 in Kentucky? notes: posting of the
Southern Genealogist's Quarterly 1954, Issue #30.
> (Jerry's answer) Not sure about this rascal and really haven't
spent any time with him. I have issued inquiries on this list and one
response is that they didn['t think the record was correct. It's hard to
see how someone that far West would return to the East, contrary to the flow
of the migrations. I'm interested in him tho'.
> (addendum) none.
>5)Hampton Sullivan, born 1810, of Robeson, North Carolina; parents Hampton
Sullivan and ? Notes: listed in IGI.
> (Jerry's answer) My Hampton.
> (addendum) I won't say the IGI is wrong but the date and location
fits my Hampton (Hampton1). I don't know where the listers got his parents.
I have never seen another Hampton born at that time to those parents.
>6)(Shanna) Hampton Sullivan, Jr. born 20 Apr 1811, of Robeson, North
Carolina, died 1 March 1852 Kenansville, Duplin, North Carolina; parents:
Isaac Sullivan and Mary Mondal; spouse: Elizabeth McIntire, Md. 10 Jan 1832
Kenansville,Duplin, North Carolina. Noates: North Carolina Marriage Records,
IGI, Partrick Bible, 1850 Duplin Census.
> (Jerry's answer) My Hampton. Same as #5.
> (addendum) I don't know where the Jr. came from but Hampton1,
whose dates, etc positively identify him as Hampton1, was NOT a Jr. He did
not even have a son whose name was Hampton.
>7)(Shanna) Hampton Sullivan, born abt. 1841 in Mississippi, son of John
Cloud Sullivan and Emily Reynolds.
> (Jerry's answer) You have this Hampton correct as being the son of
John Cloud & Emily. I think the LDS sheet on the family of John & Emily is
wrong. Somehow or the other those sheets have listed the children twice...
look at that sheet carefully. I did tell you that I found one of John
Cloud's descendants through his son Isaac and his Isaac's) daughter Mary
Agnes. If I didn't tell you, let me know! This may be the one who married
Ann Pike in Kaufman, TX on 11 Feb 1866. (I used to think it was #10 below
but the dates are too far off and I found #10 living with his parents in
Panola Co., MS in 1850, 1860 & 1870.
> (addendum) John Cloud Sullivan is absolutely the brother of
Hampton1. After or near the time Isaac1 died in Cumberland County, John
Cloud, his brother Isaac2, two of his sisters (Mary and Caroline) all went
to Mississippi. It's an extraordinarily interesting tale of migration
during a period of American expansion. Indeed, John Cloud & Emily Sullivan
did have a son named Hampton Sullivan who was born 1850/1851. It is listed
on the LDS family group sheets (Under John's number AFN:1D7Q-N9W) along with
a Hampton Hamilton Hamp Sullivan. I think this is a duplication of the first.
>8)(Shanna) Hampton Hamilton Sullivan, born Apr 1850 Carroll, Mississippi,
died 4 Mar 1910 Salado, Bell, Texas; son of John Cloud Sullivan and Emily
Reynolds. Spouse (s) Tennessin Tennie Reynolds m. 1871, Texas and Della
Rozell m. 10 Aug 1890 Quitman, Wood, Texas.
> (Jerry's answer) Same as #7, I think!
> (addendum) As above, I think this represents a mistake that is
propagated.
>9)(Shanna) Hampton Sullivan, born 1848, Dale, Alabama; son of Lee Sullivan
and Charlotte ?
> (Jerry's answer) Know nothing about him but would like to know more.
> (Addendum) This does add a little spice to the search for the
parents of Isaac1. On the Mainor LDS sheets, one can find a family group
sheet for Curtis Sullivan (b.1797) that lists Curtis' father as Hampton
Sullivan. One of Curtis' sons listed on this sheet is Lee (b. 1828 Duplin
Co., NC) whose wife was Charlotte. On Lee's group sheet, one of his two
children is Hampton (b. 1848) the other being James. Unfortunately, I do
not have the group sheet on Hampton, Curtis' father. I would like to have
one, if anyone has one. I think this Hampton is either #2 or #3 above.
>
>Question #10 was not posed by Shanna but by me and reads as follows: You
don't have a #10 but there was one. It was James Hampton Sullivan (b. 1848,
Hays Creek, MS), son of Isaac2. This James Hampton went by the name of
Hampton. I even have a photograph of him. In 1871-1873 he was an editor in
Memphis, TN.
>
>It is interesting that in 1840, there were three Hampton Sullivans in
Eastern North Carolina in the Census. Two in Duplin (Hampton1 being one,
the other I think either #2 or #3) and a third in New Hanover County that I
cannot identify. Wish I could, I'm looking though.
>
>Hope this helps. Any comments would be appreciated.
>Regards, Jerry Partrick
>>Shanna, Dan, Jerry, Mike and any others interested in Duplin Co. NC and
Hampton,
>>
>>The Leslie Anne Mainor report shows the Hampton Sullivan who married
>>Elizabeth McIntyre to be the son of Isaac AND the son of Hampton. Hampton is
>>shown as born in both Duplin and Robeson Cos. NC. He musta hadda fast
horse. 8-)
>>
>>Jerry Partrick has the Bible of Mary Agnes (Sullivan) Partrick which (I
>>understand) shows Hampton to be the son of Isaac The Mainor report for
>>Hampton, son of Hampton, lists the same facts as Jerry does for Hampton, son
>>of Isaac. The Mainor report guesses Isaac's father to be William who married
>>Elizabeth Harvey. I don't think William had a child named Isaac.
>>
>>Shanna appears to believe that Hampton had a son named Hampton but she may
>>not have any other facts about him, except siblings.
>>
>>It seems to me that we should reconcile our info since our data is swapped
>>by a number of people. In spite of the Mainor report I am presently inclined
>>to go with Jerry Partrick IF the Bible specifically shows Isaac as Hampton's
>>father along with the descendancy. I'm sure each of you agrees that we can
>>take no pride in our work unless it is correct.
>>
>>One other sticky wicket: recent info I saw indicates that John (Daniel,
>>John, John) was born in KY. I wonder if he is actually the John who married
>>Mary Calhoun and whose children were: Archibald, Duncan, Isabella and Rachel
>>Ann. If so he was in Northampton and Cumberland Cos. - KY is doubtful.
