Dear All:

#1- In attempting to research the Vesser (Vasser) dilemma, I have looked at
another source of information on Sultana Survivors/Non-Survivors:

Reprint of the Knoxville Whig, 5/31/1865
Smoky Mountain Historical Society Newsletter
Vol. XI, No. 3, Autumn 1985

Will A. McTeer, Adjutant of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry, recorded the members
of the 3rd TN who were hospitalized in the following Memphis Hospitals:

Adams
Overton
Washington
Soldier's Home

I note Vesser was in an Indiana unit; since he married in Jefferson County,
TN (near Knoxville), I thought he might have been in the third Tennessee.
No luck, he is not on McTeer's list; nor on another list of "Members of the
3rd TN Lost on the Sultana" also by McTeer.

Gene Salecker advised me once that he had the Smoky Mountain Newsletter, so
I presume it is encompassed in his very comprehensive book.

If Mr. Vesser is near the Indiana County of his ancestor's enlistment, he
could try the newspapers for a similar list to McTeers. That might have
been a nationwide attempt to notify families. He might also want to list
on Indiana GenWeb, if he hasn't already. Cyndi Howell's site might be
another place to list. I'm sympathetic to his predicament, as I realize
how elusive facts can be. Good luck!

#2- My Great Grandfather, Pvt. George Washington Carney, Co. F, Third TN
CAV (Cahaba Prisoner, Sultana Survivor) was hospitalized at Adams Hospital
and is on the Whig list. Has anyone ever found those hospital records?
After 121 pages of Pension Application, he finally received an $8 per month
pension for an injured hip. (Request "Pension Records" from the National
Archives). Many of the 121 pages were depositions from neighbors
testifying that he left for the war an able-bodied sawmill worker and
returned unable to work. There were several references to places he had
worked.

#3- When it was suggested a couple of months ago, I wrote the Naval
Institute Press to recommend reprinting Gene Salecker's book and have never
heard from them. Did anyone else?
