Prideaux is a Norman name.
Paganus Prideaux came to England with William
I understand the French would be translated "pray God".
It is a considered a Celtic family now.
Most Prideauxs came here from Cornwall from 1825ish on. Most were miners.
Many went to the Wisconsin mines, then left for the California gold rush.
I wonder if the versions Pridias, Prydias, Prdyas would be Welsh adaptations
of Prideaux? This is very interesting.
Thank you,
Suzanne Prideaux Roberts.

PRIDEAUX - Seems to be some controversy here. The name is obviously
French in appearance but was it always so?
It is found in Cornwall, England and some research has shown that it may
have originally been Pridias, Prydias, Prdyas in which case it would mean
CLAY + CLIFF (Welsh). If so, that would exclude a French origin.
A castle belonging to a Norman Frenchman bore this name and meant
MEADOW. Let's hope someone else has a better, more modern
finding.
