Subject: [SXP] HOLLOWAY Wills - more questions
Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2002 20:26:07 -0400

I was so excited when my two 18th century Wills arrived from the WSRO
today that I forgot to publicly thank Lyn Brooke for offerig lookups in
the Chichester Calendar of Wills back in late December. Had it not been
for her kindness I might have never had this great find.
I've re-read the 1800 Will for John HOLLOWAY several times this
afternoon and I've got some more questions. Please pardon the length of
the post.
1. There appear to be two "messuages or tenaments" and it seems as
though he leaves the proceeds of these to his wife along with a yearly
annuity of 20 pounds for her lifetime or until she remarries. He also
left 60 pounds outright to each of his two married daughters. Can
anyone comment on this level of income for the time period?
2. I'm assuming he must have had some sort of leasehold or copyhold in
Warningcamp since there is no mention in the Will of actual Real Estate
being bequeathed. Does this seem to be a reasonable assumption and, if
so, would there be some sort of records which might give the details?
3. Following his wife's death or remarriage, the massuages or tenaments
are to go to his 5 sons to whom he also gave the remainder of his
"moneys securities for money store (or stock) goods chattles and
personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever charges and onerates..." Am
I right in assuming the "charges and onerates" refers to any debts he or
his estate might owe or incur?
4. Finally, although I'm still not certain what happened to the 5 sons
or his widow I suspect none of them remained in the Sussex area for very
many more years. The eldest (my direct ancestor) I know married in
Wiltshire in 1801 and was dead by 1814 leaving no Will but in 1820 his
estate was probated and his widow appears to have received the sum of
800 pounds which I believe to have had something to do with his father's
estate in Sussex. I believe the second eldest married in Lyminster in
1801 but after having one child baptised in Lyminster the year they
married, they appear to have had 4 baptised in Sidlesham between
1807-1817. The third may have married in Arundel in 1806 but after the
baptism of one child in Arundle, they appear to have disappeared from
the area. I've found nothing to indicate the two youngest remained in
the Warningcamp/Poling or Lyminster area. My last question, therefore,
is why would all these brothers leave the Warningcamp area if they had
leasehold or copyhold rights to land there?
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions or comments.
