Just as a little aside to this track:

When I was studying for a History degree I did a course on America which
included emigration to the States.

>From what I learnt 'books' of letters were published or copied in local
British newspapers about positive experiences of settlers. These were
published to encourage emigration as they portrayed a very rosy picture
of life and gain.

I would very much like to know whether the authors of such letters
actually existed!
Also it would be interesting to know of letters that were written
negatively (or possibly truthfully!?)

Happy New Year
Regards
Elizabeth

Some of you have asked about the publishing of this book. Here is what I
know. The New York State Library in Albany, NY, has a copied version of
this
book, 917.3qS643. The title page says:

Twenty-Four Letters from Labourers in America to Their Friends in
England.
London: Published by Edward Rainford, Red Lion Passage, Red Lion Square.
1829. The book has an introduction by Benjamin Smith, Mountfield, near
Robertsbridge, Febryary 26th, 1829.

The copy in Albany also has another title page which states:

Sutro Branch California State Library - Occasional Papers - Reprint
Series
No. 1
Prepared under the firection of H. Bruner, P. Radin, A. Yedidia.
Twenty-Four Letters from Labourers in America to Their Friends in
England.
Assistance in the preparation of this material was furnished by the
personnel of the Works Progress Administration
Project No. 465-03-3-636, A. Yedidia, Supervisor
This publication is sponsored by the California State Library

That's all I know about this book.
Good luck.
