Trail Designation Act

Dear Friends and Fellow Historians,

Historic preservation has to have grass roots support. I wanted to
bring
some proposed legislation of interest to battlefield and military site
preservation for your information, and to encourage your support for the
initiatives. Representatives and Senators are always seeking
constituent
approbation on bills they support. All those listed below are currently
being considered by lawmakers at the committee level.

The Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail
Act:
House of Representatives resolution HR 1286 and Senate bill S 686.
This legislation will designate the route and extant historic sites
significant to the strategic redeployment of the Franco-American
coalition
armies from Rhode Island and New York to the Virginia Peninsula in 1781,
resulting in the victory at Yorktown, as a National Historic Trail.

Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefield Protection Act: HR 160
This legislation will establish a grant program to assist state, local
and
tribal government agencies, and private non-profit organizations to
acquire
battlefield land for preservation. Currently, only Civil War
battlefields
benefit from this kind of legislation.

Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefields Commemoration Coin Act:
HR 158.
This legislation will authorize the Treasury Department to mint
commemorative coins for sale as numismatic items, the surcharges for
which
will help raise the acquisition funds.

War of 1812 and Star Spangled Banner Bicentennial Commemoration
Commission
Act: HR 1389 and S 798.
This bill will create a national federal-level commission to plan and
coordinate events marking the significant bicentennial observances, and
direct appropriate federal agencies to participate with state and local
governments and private organizations.

Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail Designation Act: HR 1388
and S 797
This legislation will designate the trail and extant historic sites as a
National Historic Trail.

Thanks.

Best Regards,

Glenn
