This is from the Elias Moon #2 newsletter. A copy of this book has been
doneated to the Georgia Archvies and each new camp in the Department of
Georgia and South Carolina (when formed) will also recieve a chapter copy.
Some interesting facts about this work. There were only two copies known to
exist in libaries. Minnesota Historical Society graciously made a copy so
that we can have a copy in Georgia. The other library was Princeton and
we'll leave it at that (sorry if there are any alumni out there). The book
documents that the GAR in Georgia saved the Andersonville site, it lists
members of the order in 1894 and what regiments/ships they served. It
revealed a post war Union enclave in Tallapoosa, Georgia about five miles
from the Alabama border where 22 Union Vets are now known to be in one
cemetery, one later to be honored with a new headstone. It was the largest
per capita GAR post in the South -- a real estate deal under General
Benjamin Butler (which is not in the book but from follow up studies). By
chance, Tallappoosa happens to be about 20 miles from my location.
