On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2008 at 10:00am, a new monument honoring the comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic 1861-1865 will be dedicated at Tulsa's Rose Hill Cemetery. The intricately inscribed gray granite obelisk will stand 9 1/2 feet tall. It will be placed in a pristine setting with fencing, a walkway, benches, and landscaping. This is the only such monument in eastern Oklahoma.
The ceremony will be attended by local and national members of The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, The Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and The Daughters of the American Revolution. Also in attendance will be many gracious donors who helped make this project possible. In addition, all who have interest in honoring their Civil War ancestors are most heartily welcome.
Shortly after the monument is unveiled, a wreath will be laid and short remarks will be heard. A color guard will be present, and an honor guard will fire volleys to commemorate the service of those who served in the Union Army during the war.
Thousands of GAR comrades are buried across the state. City of Tulsa founding fathers and a survivor of the Sultana tragedy are among the thirty eight Union Veterans whose final resting place is in Tulsa's Rose Hill Cemetery. In appreciation of their service, it is fitting that we humbly place this monument.
Directions: Traveling from east or west on I-244 / Hwy 412, take the Yale Avenue exit, go 1/4 mile north to Admiral Place, turn left, heading west. The entrance to the cemetery will be on the right. The monument is in the Veteran's section, in the northeastern corner of the cemetery.
