Thanks, Ernie. Here's to education!
I enjoyed my one visit to Columbia, SC, where I saw the capital,
statues, museums, etc. I was in Columbia to visit a soldier training at
Fort Jackson.

Being a South Carolinian by birth and lnog time resident I'll shed a
little
on this part from Dann:
"When the debate on the flag over the South Carolina capital was going
on,
the final outcome was to place a historically accurate Confederate flag
near
the soldier's monument. Almost all participants, including many of the
Black
American members of the state house and senate, supported it."
I personally know, even tented with Sen Glenn McConnell who was
influentical
in the working of the legislation on this. I know he did not personally
wish the flag down but being a political genius if you will understood
the
need for the protection. He personally educated several black
leglislators
on the topics of the period so they came to understand why the flag was
important. It is ture that almost as soon as the crowd dispursed from
the
capital and the naval jack on top was replaced by a 35' flag pole with
an
ANV (of which most SC troops fought under although my reenactment unit
(10th
SC) was Army of Tennessee and only the 19th SC served full time with
AofT).
The new complaint became, its now street level, everyone will see it
despite
the fact the flagpole is shorter than the Confedeate monument which it
is
behind. The collation that made the compromise (inclding the
supermajority
needed to even touch it again) walked away stating they "removed it from
the
dome" which was the desire of the NAACP and others had stated.
Glenn is now the chairman of the Hunley Commission and be it north or
south
the results of the study of the submarine show alot of injunity for the
period.
Essentailly a classic good compromise as niether side is completely
happy,
but can live with the outcome. Note, the SCV has not pushed to put the
flag
back up, but the NAACP has pushed to keep pulling it down. You can't
really
blame the SCV for having to remain defensive and villigant.
I will say that a round of education for everyone would certianly do no
harm
and a whole lot of good.
