Doug.
If other folks are like me, the recent weather in the midwest has many of us with our heads down. Tornado warnings, alerts, floods, flooded basements, etc., can get our attention.
I have to agree with you. The more we discuss this, the better we will be, especially with the Sesquicentennial coming up.
Speaking of which, what can we, as the SUV, do to prepare for the Sesquicentennial?
I would like to see the SUV adopt a logo or something - some kind of marker - and then award it to an event, historical site, monument, reenactment, whatever, as an "Official Civil War Site" or something recognized by the SUV.
Any thoughts?

There was something I wanted to say just about the time everything really
started moving the other night and thought that I would wait till the dust
settled a bit. What I had on my mind was how remarkable I felt ( and still
feel) that this discussion has been. It has taken us all to a place where
we are examining the validity of our own beliefs as Sons of Union Veterans.
And why not? Personally I think this discussion has been a very healthy
one. If we are to go out and promote and defend these views as our
forefathers had intended by creating the order in the first place then it
seems almost vital that we all look hard at the detail and validity of these
beliefs so that we can engage the public and the critics with confidant
knowledge and conviction.
My warmest gratitude goes out to everyone who has participated in this
discussion. Certainly we have all had different slants on it and sometimes
it became quite emotional but everyone has brought good things to the
table. Therein is the beauty of it. I was certain of my convictions before
this discussion, but I have learned much from it about some things in
history I did not know and just how different some interpretations of
documents can be. It is fascinating. I would rather have this debate here
now with my brothers than be forced to have it with the public and have to
do all the reading and research some of the postings prompted on the fly.
So although the topic seems to have run it's course ( which may be for the
best, ha ha) I am not the least bit sorry it developed as it did and I say
thank you brothers. This has been fun.
