Brothers,
Brother Moore is correct in stating that JHU is a private university.
This is what information on the situation I have received that I will
gladly share with you. The SCV requestor wrote to JHU requesting rental
of a JHU room as it has done in the past preceding years for this same
memorial event. In many years past, it has rented JHU facilities for
this memorial event. What I read from the recipient of the university's
denial was that their denial came by means of a JHU telephone call to
the requestor. The reason for their denial came by way of the phone
call. The SCV representative, who is an officer of an SCV Camp in
Maryland, states that he was told over the telephone by a supervisor
from the JHU Scheduling Office that the JHU President denied the request
for the sole reason that the requesting organization is the SCV. The
requestor then wrote to the JHU President asking for a reconsideration
of the denial. In response to his letter to the JHU President
requesting a reconsideration of the denial, he received a letter on what
appeared to be official JHU stationary addressed from the Office of the
JHU President, of which I read a photocopy of the letter shown by the
letter's recipient, stating that JHU did not wish to reverse its denial.
The reason for the denial was not stated in the JHU letter. I hope that
this sheds some light on the situation for you. If I can provide
anymore clarification on this for you, I would be happy to do so.

I don't necessarily agree that judgment can be made just yet as to any
wrong-doing on the part of the university. First, it would be nice to
see the
actual denial letters, but we have to keep in mind that Johns Hopkins
IS a
private university. Also, if I were the university president, no matter
what the
reasons for denying permission, I'd be wanting to know who this
"representative" was that said the denial was because of the "being
Confederate" thing.

FYI. I think the university made a mistake in this case. Perhaps
some work by local members of the SCV aided by the SUVCW will
encourage
a response next year which more accurately reflects the liberal
tradition
of the university.
