Subject: Re: [SUVCW] Any National Encampment Reports?
Brothers and Sisters:
?
I would just like to clarify the fact that the Women's Relief Corp and the
Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War are in fact Allied Orders.
?
As quoted from the SUVCW web pages " The Gar encouraged the formation of Allied
Orders to aid them in its various works.? Numerous male organizations jousted
for the backing of the GAR and the political battles became quite severe until
the GAR finally endorsed the Sons of Veterans of the United States of America
(later to become the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War) as its heir.? A
similar but less protracted battle took place between the Women's Relief Corp
(WRC) and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic (LGAR) for the title
"official auxiliary to the GAR".? That battle was won by the WRC, which is the
only Allied Order open to women who do?not have a hereditary ancestor who would
have been eligible for the GAR. But, in this case, the LGAR retained its
strength and was made one of the Allied Orders.
?
Coming along a bit later, the Daughters of Union Veterans of the?Civil War,
similar to the SUVCW but for women, also earned the designation as an Allied
Order of the GAR.? Rounding out the list of Allied Orders is the Auxiliary to
the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War which is open to women with
hereditary ties to a Veteran or who is the spouse, sister, or daughter of a
member of the SUVCW"
?
The Daughters and WRC members do not meet with us on a National level because of
hard feelings between these?organizations and the SUVCW.? Past Commanders in
Chief's and Past National President's have been trying for years to mend the
past and encourage these Allied Sisters to meet with us on the National Level
and I pray to God that one day it will happen.
?
I am from Pennsylvania and we meet with the Daughters at our Annual Encampment.?
The LGAR and the WRC are not strong in our state, but representatives from both
of these Orders attend our Encampment.
?
Other states are not as fortunate as the P
ennsylvania Department.? We meet in
the bonds of Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty.? We may disagree on many
subjects, but in the light of day, we are all Brothers and Sisters brought
together by these bonds.
?
On the matter of the North and South, that war is over.? If the tides were
turned and we were the losers, would we still not want to honor our ancestors
who fought so valiantly for their beliefs?? In Gettysburg, we shake hands across
a wall between Union and Confederate Re enactors.? We are an historical
organization as are the Confederate organizations.? Yes, some may think the
Civil?War is not over and harbor ill feelings, but in the end, we are all
loyal?to?the same?National Flag which unites us one and all.
?
Respectfully submitted,
Cynthia Fox

Corrected Version.
Brothers:
Thanks to PCINC James Pahl for that fine report to us! It sounds like
the Department of Kentucky hosted a wonderful 128th National Encampment.
Kudos to the Department of Kentucky for a job well done! I am sorry I
missed it. I attended the National Encampment last year in
Massachusetts and enjoyed it, particularly the splendid banquet which
shown forth our fraternity. I bet the Department of Kentucky did a
great job this year in putting on a terrific banquet! I am certainly
sure that I would have enjoyed it!
Congratulations to the new slate of our national officers. I extend my
best wishes to our national officers. Also, I extend my regards to the
Department of Kansas who will host our National Encampment next year.
Respectfully in Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty,
Michael Virts, PCC
Department of Maryland

Brothers:
Allow this as a very brief report of the 128th National Encampment in
Louisville, Kentucky, just completed. Leo Kennedy of Rhode Island was
elected Commander-in-Chief in an Encampment that ran very smoothly.
James Hanby was moved up to Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief and Brad
Schall of the Department of California/Pacific is our new Junior Vice
Commander-in-Chief. Max Newman resigned as National Treasurer, with
Rich Orr of Pennsylvania being elected to fill out the final year of his
term. This is intended to be a temp. measure and Rich is not really
interested in continuing - but in helping the Order as we locate a
brother willing to assume this important office.
With Brad's promotion to JVCinC, there were three available seats on the
CofA, with five very well qualified candidates. Eric Schmincke of
Pennsylvania was running for reelection, along with Don Shaw of
Michigan, Ken Freshley of Ohio, Tad Campbell of California/Pacific an
d
Bill Vieira of Rhode Island. Elected was first Tad Campbell, then in
the second round, Ken Freshley. The third round was for a one year term
to replace Brad and Bill Vieira was elected. They join existing Council
Members Perley Mellor and Bob Petrovic. Don Palmer is in the middle of
his term as National Secretary, as is Danny Wheeler as Quartermaster.
The brother's approved minitures of the current Camp Commander badge,
Department Commander badge, Past Camp Commander badge, Past Department
Commander badge and Past Commander-in-Chief badge, which eliminates the
wearing of stars on a miniture member badge to indicate current or past
offices held. The Past Camp Commander miniture and the Past Department
Commander miniture are immediately available for $9.50 each (I believe),
plus postage from the Quartermaster. The remaining badge
s will be
available shortly.
Several policies were adopted in the the National Regulations. The
Digest was throughly reviewed and any applicable decisions will now
appear as footnotes (in the manner of the old Blue Book maintained by
the Grand Army of the Republic) in the Constitution and Regulations as
they appear on the web site, eliminating the Digest as being
authorative. It will remain for historical reference.
All discussions were held in the spirit of fraternity, charity and
loyalty, making this a very enjoyable Encampment. Saturday evening's
banquet was visited by a Past Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of
Confederate Veterans. The evening's entertainment was a civil war style
brass band, whose first selection was Dixie. The Auxiliary and the
Ladies of the Grand Army, also meeting with us, were represented at the
head table by their National Presidents. Also visiting us were the
National President of the Women's Relief Corp, the National Junior Vice
President of the Daughters of Union Veterans and the National President
of the Daughter's of the Union - while not one of the Allied Orders,
they were welcomed. MOLLUS was also represented by our own Past
Commadner-in-Ch
ief Rick Bury.
The Department of Kentucky did a wonderful job in hosting this year's
Encampment, with next year being in the Department of Kansas, followed
by the Department of Maryland hosting the 2011 National Encampment in
northern Virginia.
The Council of Administration meeting on Sunday morning, starting at
8:00am and usually lasting until past noon, was completed by 9:35am.
My wife is now awaiting me patiently, as we leave the Encampment hotel
and travel to Illinois for a funeral.
Respectfully submitted in fraternity, charity and loyalty
