Subject: [SWITZ] Surname CASTUCHE

Dear Mr Costich,
I found no surnames "Castuche", "Costich", or similar in the "Register
of Swiss Surnames" (Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz).
Lugnez and Bernese Jura lie quite far apart (some 250 km). My remarks
regarding the prefix "Ca" in surnames as abbreviation for casa (home of)
concerned the Romansh (Rhaeto-Romanic) speaking part of Eastern
Switzerland. The Lugnez valley is in this part. So the origin of your
family in the Lugnez, which you mention, could make sense. Not with my
previous explanation with "Ca" for "home of", however, but still as
place of origin.
The "Rätisches Namenbuch vol. 3. Die Personennamen Graubuendens pt. 2",
p. 511 mentions the surnames "Castrischer" and "de Castris" in this
area. Castrisch (Romansh) = Kaestris (German) is a village in the Rhine
valley at the entrance to the Lugnez valley. The "Register of Swiss
Surnames" also mentions the surname "Castrischer" as still existing in
this area.
I hope these remarks are of interest to you.
H. Rudolph Inhelder
