I agree with Phil. From all I have read about the Palatines many of them
came originally from other places, such as Switzerland, and settled in the
area of Alsace-Lorraine, near Strassborg, in the late 1600's and early
1700's. They immigrated from their home countries for various reasons
other than religion. One of the main reasons was economic as jobs were
difficult to find during these times. In this area between France and
Germany, many of the nobility began to advertise for workers to come.
Some were taylors, cooks, farmers, etc. and they found jobs with the minor
royalty in that area, which explains why some definitions of Palatine say
they were connected to a house of royalty. They were not royalty, but
they were, perhaps employed in a royal house. My ancestors supposedly
originally came from Switzerland, settled in this area of Alsace-Lorraine
for 34 to 40 years before immigrating to America.

I believe that Huguenots were practitioners of a religion by the same
name while Palatinates were people from the Palatine region between
France and what is now Germany (but was then a collection of little
states).
The Huguenots were French protestants. You may recall seeing the "Three
Musketeers" and the references to the seige of La Rochelle, which was a
Huguenot stronghold. By the time America was being settled, the
religious war was over, but the Huguenots still did not have the right
to practice their religion in peace.
The Palatinates were mostly German-speaking people who had the
misfortune to live in an area that was claimed by both France and the
German states. During the 30 years war (1618-1648), the area was
decimated by both sides.
Many of both groups emigrated to England, and eventually to America.

#9 As of 3/22/2000 we have 550 members. Traffic can get heavy so check
your
mailbox often. We should regulate traffic so it don't get out of hand.
There is an average of ten members coming and going each week.
