Tracy is correct in saying that antivirus programs need to be updated
frequently. There is a lot of virus activity right now. The leading
antivirus software writers are making new updates available often on the
same day a virus is discovered. Norton AntiVirus 2001 has an automatic
update feature which should be enabled in the configuration settings to
assure no long delay in getting new updates. McAfee may also have it.
I like to look for an update EVERY DAY BEFORE going to email to be safe. In
any case an update should be done EVERY DAY that a computer is used in
order to protect yourself and others.
Time should not be used as an excuse for not doing it EVERY DAY. It takes
about 10 seconds for me to look for a Norton update and if one is found,
about one more minute. That is on a dial-up connection.
Any email program can receive Badtrans and similar viruses, but only
Microsoft Outlook Express will allow it to copy itself and send itself to
address it finds in Outlook Express. That is why it is so important that OE
users look for updates EVERY DAY.
Lets enjoy genealogy and have a virus free day.
