Was this the newspaper calling him shiftless and his life trivial? I
take exception to this and am NOT a connection to him.
I have seen his numous records in the Natchez archives and have to insist
that he did not JUST PASS through that territory. He was as much a
contributing pioneer there as he was in his earlier pursuits. Being the
first on HIS river and surviving to go on to Natchez and then back to
Culpepper where he would have died in a bed with sheets, says a very great
deal in a positive way about his life.
My ancestor, Joseph Walling, and his brothers, followed along after
Holston and Joseph was killed by Indians as late as 1792 in KY. Does that
make his life more important because he was killed like that? I think not.
I think that article was very shallow and Stephen certainly deserves
better than this.
Thank you for sharing this. We all need to write to this paper in
protest.
