John McEvers, merchant of New York City, settled there before 1723. He
married Catharine Van Horne and their first child was baptized at the Dutch
Reformed Church in Manhattan in 1723. After her death he married her cousin
Catharine Van Horne. He died in 1751, leaving children named John, William, Charles,
James, Mary and Catharine.
A letter written in 1734 to the Belfast merchant Daniel Mussenden by John
McEvers mentioned his two brothers Charles McEvers (also in New York) and
Nicodemus McEvers (in London).
I'm revising the early chapters of "Flaxseed and Emigrants" to include some
newly-discovered material and would be grateful for any information on this
prominent New York family. Were they from Ireland or Scotland?
All the best,
Richard
