I have traced all eight of my Great grandparents and several of the female lines pretty far back, so I end up overwhelmed with the migrations. New land was being opened up in many of these places, but I do not yet understand why they stopped off for a couple of years before continuing on. It seems that most of them did. I wonder, were they waiting for the eviction of the Indians in these new lands? I have tons of info here if I ever get to it.

Just speculating here...wonder if they heard about the Cumberland
settlements and decided, once they got there, they didn't like
it...or if they stopped for awhile to rest, or because someone
got sick, or to make money for more supplies...these trips this
early were HARD...and the threat of Indian attacks (especially
for those who moved west in the 1780 to 1800) and the lack of
support facilities on the way may have make it comfortable to
stay at a place for awhile....anybody have any ideas or data or
stories about this?
