Subject: [SouthernTrails] Georgia Archives Free Lunch & Learn Lecture
Date: Fri, 7 Sep 2001 12:35:24 -0400
The Georgia Department of Archives and History cordially invites you to join
us for our September "Lunch and Learn" lecture on Tuesday, September 11,
2001 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m.
Material Culture and Migration in the Savannah Basin
Material culture, comprised of all manmade objects, reflects traditions of
groups at any given moment in history. Innovations are relatively rare, and
often result in the blending of various groups' traditions. As people
settled in the Savannah River basin, they left an imprint of their original
cultural traditions.
The basin is important because its original colonial settlement created
Georgia's later demography. The analysis and appreciation of artifacts,
documentary inventories, and heirlooms can expand understanding of our
family's past. In some cases, this information can be used to identify their
point of origin.
About the Speaker
Dale Couch, a native of South Carolina, has worked at the Georgia Archives
for 20 years. He is currently one of the veteran Reference Archivists and
Historical Research Advisors on staff. He holds a B.A. degree in History and
Classics at the University of South Carolina. Mr. Couch has also done
extensive graduate work in Art History, and is a graduate of the Institute
of Southern Material Culture at the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro.
Presently he is also a member of the Decorative Arts Advisory Board for the
Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, Georgia, and has written in many
subject-related journals.
