There are several sources for the in formation you're seeking.
1. Old St Louis City Directories
2. The 1875 St Louis Pictorial
3. The Mercantile Library
4. Check if MO has taken census of merchants and manufacturing in
the years you're interested in.
I have copy of 1875 Pictorial which has 100 plates covering the greater St
Louis area. Each plate list a number of businesses that paid to have their
name listed, but there is no comprehensive index.
The Main Reading Room of the Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis has
City Directories fot the following years: 1821, 1836-7, 1838-39, 1840-41,
1842, 1844, 1845, 1847,1848,1851, 1852, 1854-55, 1857, 1859, 1860, 1864,
and more or less there after through 1980.
