Bill- Yest there were several lumber yards in South City 1925-1850 the big three all had 5 alarm fires in the 1960s these were"Thrift Lumber" on S Kingshighway at 4920 Connecticutt- A MOPAC railroad right of way weed clearing fire spread from the trackside to the outdoor yard & burned the outdoor storage & the 200"x200' Thrift lumber building down. That same year a huge lumber yard (name unknown)burned down on N side of Vandeventer in the 4700 block, then circa 1967 Stockman Lumber on Dewey @ Bates burned, it was rebuilt the following year & still operates there!
I was at all 3 fires-called out on 3rd alarm as structural safety advisor to the StLouis Fire dept-
I wa the Dept of Public Safety chief Engr & Deputy building Commr then. Also a huge Central hardware & lumber store was from 1940-1984 @ Pierce & Manchester (approx 4800 Manchester-it went broke along with 4 of their other local stores & asasetts sold to Associaed dry goods stores of NYC who closed them out here & in Ohio-

Gary,
Are you aware of any lumber yard in South St. Louis during the years
between 1925 through 1950? Can you point me in the right direction to
do a search? Anything you can give me, will be appreciated.
