Greetings to the first 3 subscribers to the new TAFFET list (besides
myself -- I make 4).
Let's all introduce ourselves.
My name is Mary D. Taffet. I was not born into the Taffet line, but
rather married into it; my husband is a great-grandson of Joseph Jacob
TAFFET and Fannie GOLD who immigrated to the U.S. (Manhattan area)
sometime between 1881 and 1884. One source (Joseph's naturalization)
provides November 10, 1881 as the date of arrival. But the 1900 census
for the Manhattan borough shows that Joseph Taffet came in 1884 and his
wife Fannie and oldest son Dave came in 1885. Until I find the actual
passenger list, I will never know. Unfortunately, they came too early
for Ellis Island records to include them; they probably came through
Castle Garden instead.
Joseph Jacob TAFFET was born either August of 1861 (from the 1900
census) or December of 1864 (Naturalization record); he died between
1925 and 1927 in Brooklyn and is buried in Mount Judah Cemetery, which I
believe is in Queens county, NY. His wife Fannie GOLD was born circa
1862, according to the 1900 census; I don't know when she died, but she
is also buried at Mount Judah Cemetery. Joseph and Fannie and their
oldest child Dave were all born in Austria, in what is probably today
Poland. The premise at this time is that they came from the
Dembitz/Debica area, but that has yet to be proven.
Joseph and Fannie had 9 children, of whom 7 were living and accounted
for in the 1900 census (the other two must have died young, I don't even
have their names):
1) Dave TAFFET (born circa 02/1883), married Becky (maiden surname
unknown); their children were Alex Taffet and Minnie Taffet. Dave died
in Florida and is buried in Mount Judah Cemetery.
2) Edith TAFFET (1890-?), known as 'Ida', married Ben SILVER; they were
the parents of Seymour SILVER, Ruth SILVER & Edith SILVER.
3) Nathan TAFFET (07/1892-?), known as 'Joseph', was married 3 times --
first to Edith ALEXANDER, then to Mary 'Marie' MIZLER, and finally to
Bonnie (maiden surname unknown). We don't know exactly when Nathan
died, but we know he died in Chicago, IL.
4) Samuel (or possibly Samual) TAFFET (12/01/1894-09/25/1942; buried in
Mount Judah Cemetery); married Minnie HOMLEVSKY/HUMMEL
(04/24/1898-10/1983; died in Florida & buried there). Samuel and Minnie
are my husband's grandparents. Children include Edith TAFFET and Joseph
Jerome TAFFET.
5) Irving TAFFET (06/12/1895-04/1975; buried in Mount Judah Cemetery);
married Dora LAPIDUS (?-?; also buried in Mount Judah). Irving and Dora
had two children -- Eleanor TAFFET and Frank TAFFET.
6) Julia TAFFET (?-?; married Sam EPSTEIN); no solid information on
Julia. She may be the one listed in the Social Security Index, but I'm
not completely certain of that.
7) Anne TAFFET (?-?; buried in Mount Judah); married Theodore 'Pat'
ISRAEL (?-?; buried in Mount Judah). Anne and Pat and one child --
Joseph J. ISRAEL.
I have some limited information on descendants, but not much (except my
husband's direct line of course).
I have created a mailing list homepage, which you will find here:

If anybody wants to be added as a researcher, and/or to have their
immigrant listed -- just let me know.
Now let's hear a litte bit from the rest of you.
