Katy -- I'm not surprised you had trouble, because this was a bit obscure. The only reason I was able to help was that I'm working on a huge whole-family genealogy and have spent a major amount of time transcribing every online census record I could lay my hands on. Once I pulled up my 1880 and 1900 records and located Columbus in them, I was able to coordinate them with the 1860 record, and there we were. (Wherever that is.)
I apologize, by the way, for that cryptic statement about the ancestry of William Tankersley, Sr. of North Carolina. William seems to have been a brother or possibly a cousin of my triple-great-grandfather, Charles Tankersley, and I have a paper trail on these guys that's about ten pages long. I do know that the CWT book was drastically wrong about my Charles, which is one of the things that makes me suspect it was also wrong about William. The only problem is, I can't find any documented evidence as to their real ancestry, so for now the trail stops with my Charles and your (?) William.
That still takes us back to the 1740's, though, so things could be worse!
I'm so glad I was able to help. Please let me know if you find any early information I've missed.
Harriet
