Hi, Mary Jo,

According to the 1895 genealogy by Charles W. Tankersley, which has some major problems but seems to have been pretty accurate on this particular lineage, the Richard Tankersley who married Nancy Leek was the son of Richard Tankersley III and Mary Wood of Amherst County, Virginia. Here's a brief overview of my records regarding Richard and Nancy:

RICHARD TANKERSLEY. Born March 6, 1775. Married Nancy Leek in 1798. Died in 1821.

Children:

Mary Tankersley, 1800, m. Elijah Brown
Rachael Tankersley, 1803, m. Henry Sly
Nancy Tankersley, 1804, m. William Black
John Tankersley, 1807, m. Abbie Eutsler
Julia Tankersley, June 9, 1809, m. (1) a Stanton/Staunton and (2) Franklin Smeltz
William Tankersley, 1811, m. Susan Staunton
Jane Tankersley, April 10, 1814, m. William Prym
Winston Tankersley, May 17, 1816, apparently never married
Franklin Tankersley, August 6, 1818, m. (1) Dianah Pirkey and (2) Catharine Mobley
Samuel A. Tankersley, 1821, m. Elizabeth R. Miley

The marriage of Richard Tankersley and Nancy Leek, daughter of Mark Leek, was recorded on January 2, 1800 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Some other records show her name as Ann Sales Leek.

My records are also showing that Richard and Nancy's daughter Rachael married Henry Sly in Rockbridge County on January 3, 1822, and census records show that they were still together as late as 1850. I haven't followed them beyond that point. Was David Mynes by chance a later marriage? According to the 1850 census, her children by Henry Sly were William, Rachel, Henry, Jacob, Lucy, Alfred, James and Harvey. I don't know whether that's a complete list, since the census record is all I have on her children.

By the way, you'll find a lot of data on the web, copied from that old genealogy, about the supposed ancestry of Richard Tankersley III. We can document that he was the son of Richard Tankersley Jr., who is traditionally accepted as having been the son of Richard Sr. of Caroline County and his wife Margaret Mathews, but the old genealogy seems to have made some serious errors when it came to Richard Sr.'s ancestry. Whatever you do, don't pay any attention to the stuff about descent from the lords of Tankersley Parish, Yorkshire, because the old genealogy was just plain wrong about this.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Harriet
