Dear Gary M. TANNER,
You do not know me. I am new to the world of computers, but not to
genealogical research. I have been researching my families of Breckinridge
County and surrounding counties of Kentucky for over 18 years. I just joined
Rootsweb a couple of weeks ago on my WELLS line. It wasn't until the other
day that I added some of my other surnames, including TANNER. I saw a posting
that you sent to "Terry" on July 29 about the info you have on your ancester,
John TANNER of Hardin County, Ky. I made a copy of your answer, because I
think I may have some info that might help.
My great great grandma was Bathsheba TANNER b. 18-Jan-1820 in Daviess
Co., Ky. d. 28-July-1898 in Breckinridge Co., Ky. She married twice, but
only had children by her first husband. Married # 1 to Samuel WHITWORTH b.
9-Nov-1815 in Breckinridge Co., Ky d. 12-Jan-1862 in Breckinridge Co., Ky.
They are both buried at the Garfield Cemetery, at Garfield, Breckinridge Co.,
Ky. (near Hardinsburg). They both have single tombstones. Bathsheba' Married
# 2 to James F. MARTIN on 12-Oct-1868 in Breckinridge Co., Ky. James F.
MARTIN b. 10-sept-1840 in Hardin Co., Ky. d. 11-Nov-1890, and he is buried at
the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Hardin Co., Ky. He also has a single
tombstone. (Yes, he was 20 years younger than Bathsheba). I have not found a
marriage record for Bathsheba and Samuel. The early marriages (before 1850),
were destroyed in a 1958 court house fire at Hardinsburg. I did not find
their marriage in the Rev. James Taylor marriage journal that was published in
the Vol. I, of Breckinridge Co., Ky Records, by Michael and Bettie Cook, even
though Bathsheba and James were married by this Rev. Taylor in 1868.
Bathsheba TANNER WHITWORTH MARTIN was the d/o Henry TANNER and Sarah
(________?). I have a document to prove this, from a deed book at the court
house at Hardinsburg, Breckinridge Co., Ky. This document lists all of Henry
and Sarah TANNER's children, dated 6-March-1840. Here are the children for
them:
1- Edward TANNER b. about 1818-1819 Daviess Co., Ky. Md- Mary Elizabeth
NABORS ( NEIGHBORS?). I have them living in 1840 and 1850 in Grayson Co.,
Ky.; 1860, 1870, and 1880 in Breckinridge Co., Ky. I have found 9 children
for them, including William T. TANNER b. about 1853. The wife, Mary Elizabeth
NABORS TANNER is buried at the ESKRIDGE Cemetery, across the road from the
entrance to the Rough River Lodge in southern Breckinridge Co., Ky. She has a
tombstone. I have not found their marriage record, (Md. before 1840). I have
searched the Marriage records books I own for Bullitt Co., Meade Co., and
Hardin Co., in Ky., for this time period, and didn't find them.
2- Bathsheba TANNER Md# 1- Samuel WHITWORTH Md# 2- James F. MARTIN
3- Frederick TANNER b. about 1824 Married before 1850 to Catherine ______?
4- Amelia TANNER b. before 1840 and d. between 1840--1859. No info.
5- Minerva Jane TANNER b. about 1829 and d. between Aug-1859 and Oct-1863.
She Married #1 Joseph GUILL about 1845--1846. Joseph died 1852-1860. They
had 3 children. Minerva Married #2- the first wife of James F. Martin, on
15-Oct-1860 in Breckinridge Co., Ky. After Minerva died, James married her
older sister, the widow Bathsheba. Minerva and James had no children that I
could locate.
6- Henry J. TANNER b. about 1831 Breckinridge Co., Ky. I believe he died
around 1864, because I found in Guardian Bond Book 3 (1861--1866) for
Breckinridge Co., Ky. (dated on 18-July-1864), where his wife and mother of
their children was given guardianship over their 4 children: Catherine F.,
Eliza Ann, Martha A., and Susan M. TANNER. His wife was Angeline ________?,
and I believe she died around 1868, because I found in Guardian Bond Book 4
(May-1866--June-1870), where John P, Haswell (believe he was a Judge of
Breckinridge Co., Ky.), became guardian of these same children, except for
daughter, Martha; I believe she probably was married by this time. Bondsman
was Elijah R. ESKRIDGE. There was a letter of one Samuel PHIPS (PHIPPS), who
declined to be guardian and to be the administrator of the estate of the late
Mrs. Angeline TANNER. This was dated on 1-April-1868. On the 1850 census of
Breckinridge Co., Ky., Angeline was listed as Pauline, and they had no
children yet. They were living next to his parents, Henry and Sarah TANNER.
Henry and Angeline were living in 1860 Hardin Co., Ky. with 4 daus., and were
both dead by 1870 census, but I found their 3 daus., C.T. (Catherine Frances),
E.E. (Elizabeth "Eliza" Ellen), and S.M. (Susan Mary), living in Breckinridge
Co., Ky. with the family of Nicolas PHIPS (PHIPPS). There is a possibility
that Angeline could have been a PHIPPS.
7- Sarah Ellen TANNER b. about 1832 Breckinridge Co., Ky. Married between
1840--1850 to Hugh Graham JOHNSON b. about 1832 in Tennessee. I found them
living in Breckinridge Co., Ky. on 1850, 1860, and 1870 census, and up to
1870, they had 9 children. I have not located them in 1880; believe they
moved to Hardin Co., Ky. (no proof). I do not have access to that census.
8-Frances Ann TANNER b. 1836--1838 in Breckinridge Co., Ky. d. 18-April-1877
in Grayson Co., Ky. from childbirth. I believe her infant died too. Md. to
Samuel AUBREY on 11-Dec-1860 at her mother's home in Breckinridge Co., Ky.
Samuel AUBREY was married 4 times all together, I believe. (I also have
AUBREY ancestery, and have gathered a lot of info on all the AUBREY'S.).
9- Marion TANNER (female) b. before 1840 and d. between 1840--1859. She
either married or died between this time period. no info.
This ends the children of Henry and Sarah (______) TANNER.
Henry TANNER b. about 1791 Daviess Co., Ky. and died in 1859 in Breckinridge
Co., Ky. I have a document that proves he is the s/o Jennings TANNER dated
19-May-1817 (County Court Minute Book 2 , covering 1813--1818), where "Henry
TANNER came into court and moved the court for leave to administer on the
estate of Jennings TANNER, his deceased father", of Breckinridge Co., Ky.
Now, there are some who believes that Jennings TANNER's wife was a NANCE, but
I have not been able to find proof of that statement; possibly all from North
Carolina before coming to Kentucky. There were a lot of TANNERS that were in
Daviess County, Ky. very early....some moving into Breckinridge, Ohio, McLean,
Grayson, Hancock, and Hardin counties in Ky. And possibly Meade Co., too. I
have a lot of records that I have gathered about the TANNER family over the
years, and I would be willing to search what I have to help anyone. Just e-
mail me anytime. I hope this helps either you, Gary, or Terry, if you should
read this.
