Surname: Tanner
-------------------------

Does anyone have new information as to where in England William Tanner
of South Kingstown, Rhode Island immigrated from? All that is known is
that he came from England and he is first mention as a witness to a deed
in 1682. Most searchers list him as coming to New England in 1680. Some
researchers list his birth town as Tenterden, Kent Co., England, however,
the Rev. George C. Tanner, who wrote the family history, thought that the
Rhode Island Tanners were orginially from the "west of England". Recently,
I got a CD from Family Tree Maker title "The Complete Book of Emigrants,
1607-1776" and it listed a William Tanner coming to America in 1680. This
William Tanner was a reprieved prisoner from Ducklington (PRO: C66/3217/6).
Ducklington is just west of Oxford which is located in the center part
of Souther England. It does not say where he was transported to in America.
Does anyone know anybody who could possibly check the Oxfordshire court
records or Ducklington records(if either still exist) to see if it list
the colony he was sent to and possibly where he was born. When I searched
the Latter Day Saints site, I found a lot of Tanner's listed as being born
in Tetbury, Gloucestershire in the 1600's (near the time that William Tanner
was supposed to have been born)and Tetbury is not too far from Ducklington.
Maybe he was originally from Tetbury? What this Tanner did to be a prisoner
is anyone's guess. I did put this information on the internet at the Family
Tree Message Board for Tanner's and on the Oxfordshire message board but
have had no response. Maybe the word prisoner is turning people off but
a lot of the people who came to America came to escape some problem. Hopefully,
this information will give someone a key in trying to connect the South
Kingstown, Rhode Island Tanner's to England.
