I found a book at the library today:
(I can't believe it but I forgot to write down the author's name, but can go
back)
Loose papers of the North Carolina Archives.

Introduction
The records contained in the following volume are from two sources within
the Secretary of State of North Carolina records.
One source is the loose papers (SS889-898), assorted and collected
alphabetically into ten(10) boxes at the North Carolina archives. These
papers, for the most part, are estate proceedings and inventories for the
years 1712-1798. One will, unnoted elsewhere, surfaced in this collection:
That of William Colson of Montgomery County. I assigned a number to each
main entry and indexed accordingly.
The second source is from two will books in the Secretary of State
records: SS875 and SS876. Many administrations and inventories are
included in these two "will" books. Since the materials are the same kind
of records included in the loose papers, and also since I am in the process
of abstracting the wills separately, I have included these records with the
loose papers. Again, a number was assigned to each entry; in addition, the
page number was included in parentheses beside the assigned number; the
header on each page indicates which book contains the material.
As always, I encourage the researcher to consult the original.
My thanks to Ed Morris of the North Carolina Archives for his help, and
to his helpers Rusty and Mary and all the others.
