John E J served with the CSA Quitman Guards of Pike Co.,
Mississippi, Capt. Samuel A. Matthews Company, Mississippi
Volunteers, Co.E, 16th Regiment, Ms Infantry, organized on 23
April 1863 at Holmesville, Pike Co., Mississippi.

His military muster rolls indicate he was mustered in as a
wagonmaster by Capt. Griffith on 21 Apr 1861 in Holmesville, Pike
Co., Mississippi. He was 25 years old, with dark complexion, dark
hair, dark eyes, six foot tall. At Corinth they connected with the
16th Mississippi regiment, composed of nine other companies and he
was detached as a waggoner on May 1861 (Corrinth, Mississippi).

John E J had a distinguished record fighting in some of the worst
battles of the Civil War before he deserted at Petersburg, Virginia
on the 27th of January 1865. He subsequently was taken Prisoner of
War as a Rebel Deserter at Knoxville, Tennesse on 12 Mar 1865. He
took the deserters oath on 16 Mar 1865 and was sent to Chattanooga,

John E J was my grandmother's father.

Note:

The Haygoods always said their grandfather, John E J had a wife
before Adeline. Emmett Haygood (Harrisonburg) said his grandfather
had three children by her. He did not know the children. I have
found no records of any children. All known children were Adeline
Walter's children. I do not know what happened to Salina.
