Lotus,
The following keeps appearing in various postings regarding Samuel Tarver whose will was filed December Court 1778, Northampton County, NC:
Will of Elizabeth Rowell, 1746, (Northampton Co., NC, /s/ Jan 20,
1745-1746. /p/ May Court 1746), names son and executor: Samuel
Tarver; daughter: Mary Rowell; wit. Thomas Holt, John Gill, Samuel
Tarver; CC Rt. Forster. filed May Court 1746.
[Sorry for the Bold Print. Sometimes that happens when I cut and paste, and haven't been able to solve the problem.]
I checked a book of published abstracts of North Carolina wills, and found the same as the above abstract; except:
"Names son and executor: Samuel ROWELL...."
I have not seen the actual will of Elizabeth Rowell. I had wondered if Elizabeth Rowell will had "son and executor: Samuel TARVER, and he had married Elizabeth Rowell's dau., Mary, why then, was Mary given as 'Mary Rowell' and not 'Mary TARVER.
Also, I went back to Samuel Tarver's will, and he bequeathed "to my Dear well beloved wife Mary Tarver during her widowhood or lifetime all my Cattle, horses, furniture etc..."
Usually, a person remarked about "my now wife" if he had married a second time. From the tone of the will, it appears he his referring to a wife of a long period of time.
Has anyone a photocopy of the actual will of Elizabeth Rowell? The original will is at the North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh. There is a copy in the Secretary of State Records also at Raleigh.
I have a copy of Mitchell, North Carolina Wills, A Testator Index.
It appears to me that Samuel Tarver was married only to Mary Davis, daughter of Thomas Davis, whose will was filed for probate 12 Nov 1778, Southampton Co., VA, page 236 of [I assume book one?]
Cary
