Hi Lotus, Cary and all the rest:

Ya'll have certainly done a lot of work on the Tarvers. I keep hoping I will find something on my Tarvers. The 1830 Greenville, SC census you mentioned for John Tarver is my 2nd great grandfather, who was a Methodist circuit rider minister. He was married to Elizabeth Jane__?___. He was born 1800 and so was Elizabeth. He died in 1853. John and Elizabeth had children: Clarinda, b. 1820: Molly Lueza, b. 1824: Theresa, b. 1826: Mathilda, b. 1828: Zilpha, b. 1830: Frances, b. 1831: William Wesley, b. 1836: Martha Elizabeth "Betsy", b. abt. 1838.

This brick wall of mine has been going on for years. Trying to find Elizabeth's maiden name and parents of both Elizabeth and John.

Any help would be appreciated.

Betty Collier King
Greenville, SC

[That is my great-great grandfather was acquiring land in the 1850s. Some of that passed to his daughter (who died in 1938). Some had passed to my father and his brothers and sisters in 1926. All this was by will. no deeds had been made for any of this land since my great-great grandfather bought it. If the depression had not happened, my father probably would not have lost this land, and it would still be in the hands of his children and grandchildren. I know this sounds complicated, but no change of hands would be shown in deeds in over 150 years. However, the probate files at the courthouse would make it easy to see how this land moved along. It just kept being undivided land and/or transferred by particular clauses in various wills.

Those first land grants in many cases are very difficult to find. We have searched for years for the early ones in what is now Cross County, Arkansas. These were made in the early 1820s, but it was about 1830 or so before there are any of record.
