Lotus,
Four paragraphs down in John Tarver, Barnwell SC 1804/1808, you wrote: "A
few weeks after, on January 17, 1804, one John Tarver, Jr., sells 14 acres
on the Savannah River to David Odom (DB U:274, recorded 22 Jan 1836."
Is that date 22 January 1836 correct? It could very well be as there was no
law requiring registration of deeds. Most people did so for security
reasons. However, some didn't. The deed eventually became recorded when a
sale of the land took place.
As I look at this abstract, several questions come to mind. I wonder if
anyone has any thoughts on answers to these questions.
Who is this John Tarver, Jr., selling land, 17 January 1804?
Jr. was used at that time to distinguish a younger person of the same name
from the older. It could be a son, nephew, cousin, etc.
Exactly where was this 14 acres located?
If it is ON the Savannah River, then it would be some distances from that of
John Tarver on the Four Mile Branch Waters of the Savannah River.
Have I been mistaken in thinking that John Tarver who married in 1812, Amite
Co., Mississippi, Martha Mathews was born about 1787-1790?
The only John Tarver that would be younger than John Tarver of Four Mile
Branch Waters that I have identified for the time and place (1804, Barnwell
Co., SC) is the John that came to Miss. and m. 1812 Martha Mathews.
I have thought that Thomas Tarver might have been the father of a John
Tarver that is later found in SC. This would be another candidate for this
John Tarver, Jr., that sells land in 1804.
There were descendants of Andrew Tarver living close to the Savannah River
in Georgia. I do not have a John that is younger than the John Tarver (son
of Samuel) who have land on Four Mile Branch waters. However, the Andrew's
son John could have been younger that Samuel's son John.
Any other suggestions will be helpful.
Cary
