In 1956, Rosalie Tarver Wade passed away, and a year later H. M. Wade
married her first cousin, Mrs. Louise Watkins Powe, who became the new
mistress of the Wade mansion. 18 After Mr. Wade died in 1961, she lived in
the house for another sixteen years, but decided she could no longer
maintain the estate when some of the longtime servants retired because of
age and health. 19
