The Tatum Family History

According to Media Research Bureau, Washington, D.C., the surname Tatum or
Tathen is derived from the residence of its first bearers in the County of
Lancaster, England. The place name originated in the Old English suffix name
denoting home and estate, combined with the feminine nominal personal name
Tate, which means cheerful, gay brisk, or with it masculine equivalent Tata.
The literal meaning of the name is thus Tata's or Tate's home. In ancient
English and early American records the name appears in various spellings of
Tatechame, Tathame, Tattam, Tatam, Tatham, Tatum"

Prior to World War I, David Tatum of Missori spent two years of research in
England. According to him, our first ancestor in England bearing the name
Tata came with William the Conqueror in the year 1066.

>From the Media Research: "Among the earliest definite records of the name in
England are those of William of Tatham, a Lankenshire man, about the
beginning of the thirteenth century, if not before; Thomas de Tataham of
Yorkshire in the year 1379." Others of the name appear from Time to time,
but no direct lineage is known until three brothers, Augustine, Lawrence,
and Nathaneill Tatham sailed from Southhampton, England, on the Good Ship
George in 1619 for America via Bermuda. In 1620 this ship landed in New
Jersey where Augustine remained and Nathaniell traveled on to Virginia.
Nothing is known of Lawrence except that descendants of Nathaneill sometimes
gave their children the name Lawrence.

>From the Virginia Colonial Record: "So far as can be definitely
ascertained, the first in America, Nathaniell Tatham, who immigrated to
Virginia and settle in Charles City County."
