My mother always told me a story about her grandfather Hiram,( James
Terwilliger's son) that he and some other children from the wagon train
found some "pretty rocks" and brought them back to camp in a Blue
Bucket. James pounded them out on a wagon wheel rim and they thought
they were gold, but the children couldn't find the place that they were
found. This story was told to my mother, Ethel Buttz by Hiram himself,
who was 5 in 1845. I suppose he remembered some of the incident, and
heard stories from his father also. Linda Crew wrote a historical
fiction account of this wagon train called "A Heart For any Fate" which
tells the story of the King Family of King's Valley OR. There is mention
of the Blue Bucket Mine in it. I've chatted with her online and she was
very interested in the Terwilliger story of the crossing of 1845. Her
book is young adult fiction, but I found it a good read! Thanks for the
info Rosy! Missy
