Sophia's Clippings were pasted in a book called " Department of Agriculture - Report 1884". There are obituaries, poetry, recipes, and clippings about social events, etc., collected by Sophia Cook Smith Allen
Orchard, who came on the Oregon Trail in 1851-52. There is not usually an indication of the name of the newspaper, and the year is not usually given in the obituary. If a date or name is found it will be added.
DO YOU REMEMBER?
The old Central school, which stood until the late '80s on the block where the Portland hotel now is? More contributors to the "Do You Remember?"
column inquire about this building than about any other thing remembered of Portland's earlier days. The photograph was taken in 1878 and the sparsely
settled blocks surrounding the school can be noted.
The school was first opened on Monday, May 17, 1858, but the first building was much smaller than that shown, for additions were built to it in 1872 and
1873. The first principal was L.L. TERWILLIGER, who remained at the head of the school for 2 1/4 years. Some of those who followed him were the Rev.
George C. CHANDLER, G.F. BOYNTON, O.S. FRAMBES, John McBRIDE, E.P. BEEBE, T.H. CRAWFORD and S.W. KING.
The original cost of the schoolhouse was $6000, and it was built only after considerable debate and deliberation. Benjamin STARK objected to a school
tax because, he said, the county would soon have to stand the cost of building a jail, and Colonel J.M. KEELER replied that if school interests were carefully fostered there would be no need of a jail.

Source: There are many of Sophia's clippings posted by Barbara Cady and they can be viewed at the Oregon rootsweb.com archive. This was the only clipping I saw that mentioned the name "Terwilliger".
The Terwilliger item was posted on June 22, 1999.

Title: Dr. Lewis Lisha Terwilliger born 1833 Pennsylvania. Parents John Terwilliger, Mary Terwilliger. He was a civil war era doctor and died of blood poisoning---father John Terwilliger is the brother of James Terwilliger b. around 1808/1809 NY of Portland, Oregon.
I do not know if LL Terwiliger the principal is Lewis Lisha Terwilliger. I have only seen the principal listed with initials.
