My relatives were part of the great diaspora from the Palatinate. I'm
interested in both general information about the Palatinate migration, and
in the families I've listed below.
Thank you, Denny Shirer, for the links to general information. I would
welcome more history and references.
I got more interested in all of this when I moved to Maryland, went to
Frederick, and saw Schifferstadt. It's a 1756 German farm house,
beautifully built in stone, which is now a museum. Joseph BRUNNER, who
emigrated with his wife and family in 1729 on the Allen to Philadelphia,
were lured by a land offer by Lord Baltimore to the Monocacy settlement,
which later became Frederick, MD. (Baltimore, proprietor of Maryland,
offered 200 acres free to anyone who would on "any of the backLands on the
Northern and Western boundaries of our said province," with the only cost
being a rent of one cent per acre after the fourth year. This from a
pamphlet, sold at the house, titled "The Brunners of Scheverstadt"--the
German name of the town the family was from, for which they named their
house.)
The house is well worth a visit. It has a five-plate stove (dated 1756)
with a Bible verse in German, and a vaulted cellar carved from rock. It's
described as one of the best examples of German-American architecture.
I'm interested in the following German names--STAUDT, STOUT, MEISEL--and
the families they married into--DAGER, DUNNET, SAWHILL, BINGHAM.
My grandfather's records of notes of a conversation with his father, which
he copied for me, show the Stout family going back to John Stout (born in
1815), residing in Upper Dublin Township, Montgomery County, PA. He
married Charlotte Dager. Family tradition has it that his father was
Frederick Stout (Staudt, I believe) who married a Dunnet. Three Stout
brothers married three Dunnet sisters--but I don't have their names.
I also found a Frederick Staudt, the fifth son of
Johannes Staudt, who married Hannah Elizabeth Hefferich. There are a few
references in church records to one or more Frederick Staudts. These I
haven't checked. I've also seen a family history, "The Staudt-Stoudt-Stout
Family of Ohio", and some of the passenger lists. I have looked at the
records at the National Archive, including the census records from 1790 on.
An 1850 census for Upper Dublin lists Frederic Stout, 77; Sarah Stout, 71;
and Catherine Stout. My conclusion is that the German Staudts and our
Stouts are the same families. But I don't know exactly how they are
related.
There are numerous Dagers and Dunnets in the census records, living in
Upper Dublin Township, but I know little about these families. I would
love to know more. First names of the Dunnet males in the early censuses
are Christian, Jesse, and George. Priscilla Dunnet, aged 80, is listed in
the 1850 census. First names of the Dagers are Catherine (a widow?), John,
Ludwick, and Peter in Montgomery County--Martin Dager in Washington, and
Philip in Berks County.
Our Stouts moved west to Pittsburgh. If anyone wants more information
about them, I'd be happy to help.
