Even though the Wagon Road didn't pass directly through Guilford, that road
and the eastern route were how settlers moved into the general area. They
sometimes show up in records at the Salisbury or Hillsborough courts before they
appear in the land records for the area where they eventually settled. Some
interstate routes follow much of the old migration routes.
In terms of looking for which county has records on them, Catawba NCGenWeb
has a series of pages of county formation maps for NC:

This information is very helpful when researching in early NC records.
