Does anyone know what the following means?

In the 1824-1830 Tax records for Charlotte Co. VA, my John Thompson is
listed as follows:

John Thompson (sf)

Any idea what the "sf" would stand for? He is listed as such for 4 tax
years, until he disappears from the records.
