I see from your letter to the Thompson-L list, that you are frustrated.
As a subscriber to several lists, perhaps I can help you. First of all,
when you subscribe to a list, you receive a welcome letter. I have used
AOL, and seem to remember that unless you SAVE that message, it disappears
after a time. So perhaps you no longer have the letter.
Being subscribed and unsubscribed to mailing lists is done by robots. Smart
ones, but nonetheless, they are robots. So whenever you sign up for a
mailing list, you need to make sure that you know how to order the robot
around. Cuz there's only ONE way to unsubscribe, if the listowner happens
to be unavailable for a time. In the case of Thompson-L you may already
have been unsubscribed. If so, you should have gotten a letter telling you
so. In that case, trashcan this letter.
BUT ... in the future, remember: Rootsweb "UNSUBSCRIBE" letters are almost
always handled the same way. If you are subscribed to THOMPSON-L you can
only UNsub by sending a letter to (note the
word "request" there). You then place the word "unsubscribe" in the message
area. If you are subscribed to , you will UNsub by
writing to with the word "unsubscribe" in the
message area (again, note the word "request").
As far as your reporting this to AOL, well ... you must do as you see fit.
I know you're frustrated. But remember ... you DID get the welcome letter.
And when you subscribed, you were told how to unsubscribe. So, chalk this
up to "a lesson well learned", and after this remember that EVERY time you
get a welcome letter or get a message that tells you important information,
like passwords ... as long as you're on AOL, you must be sure to SAVE them.
Or they'll disappear, in some not-so-faroff-future ... and there you'll be,
frustrated again.
I hope this helps you. I've been there, too ... so hang in there. Don't
let this feel like a sour experience with Rootsweb.
