Dear Tilden cousins,
First, I want to thank Ralph Dean Clark for (1) the wonderful work he's
doing posting census information, which in turn has (2) reinspired my
interest in my Tilden lineage. Some years ago, a cousin researching our
Tilden lineage came up with the following. Whether (before 1800,
anyway) it's all accurate or only a little accurate, I'm not sure. I
would enjoy hearing from anyone who recognizes and claims a link to any
of these names--especially, but not limited to, the later ones. The
following line appears to have a number of weak links, but I'm told the
direct line is the following (starting with Nathaniel Tilden). In the
interest of space, I have omitted all collateral lines, but I would
enjoy hearing from anyone who has information about them.
1. NATHANIEL TILDEN (bap. 28 Jul 1583, Tenterten, Kent; d. 1641,
Scituate, MA) m. (c. late 1607 or early 1608) Lydia Huckstep
2. STEPHEN TILDEN (b. 11 Oct 1629, Tenterden, Kent; d. 22 Aug 1711,
Scituate, MA) m. Hannah Little.
[NOTE: I have seen varying dates for the marriage of Stephen and
Hannah, which do not seem to be explained by calendar differences. I'd
like to hear of a primary authority.]
3. STEPHEN TILDEN (b.c. 1663, Marshfield, MA; d. 1767, Lebanon, NH).
This Stephen was said to have had seven wives and fathered 19 children.
He is further said to have moved to Lebanon, NH and died there in 1767
at the age of 104. I would sure like to know if anyone else has
information on such a person.
4. STEPHEN TILDEN (b.1687; d. 27 Nov 1770, Lebanon, CT) m./1 (1712)
Sarah Root; m./2 (1717) Mary Powell. This Stephen was said to have been
a poet and a noted lawyer in Windham Co, CT.
5. JOSEPH TILDEN (b.c. 1720)
[NOTE: At least one source I've seen gives his wife as Sarah
Richardson; I would like further details from anyone who might have
them. This appears to be one of the weak links. From here on, however,
the information appears to be fairly solid.]
6. STEPHEN TILDEN (b.c. 1757 or 1758, in Bolton, Coventry, or Windsor,
CT) m. Dorothy Goodrich (b.c. 1760, Coos Co, NH). This Stephen, and his
wife, Dorothy, were said to have received Revolutionary War pensions for
his service in the First Continental Regiment of Connecticut for three
years' service from 15 Feb 1777 to 17 Feb 1780. Moved to St. Armand,
Lower Canada, before 1797.
7. ZIMRI TILDEN (b. 24 Mar 1797, St. Armand, Lower Canada; d. 3 Jul
1883; buried Albuna Cemetery, Albuna, Ontario). Served in the U.S.
army, though, in the War of 1812; enlisted at Stewart's Town, NH in
Rufus Stewart's Co, 31st Regt., U.S. Infantry, 20 May 1813 to 29 Jul
1814.
8. SABINA LUCRETIA TILDEN (b. 21 Jun 1836, Essex Co, Ontario; d. 6 Jun
1916, Port Angeles, WA) m./1 (c.1859-1860) Frederick William Dornton;
m./2 (c.1880, Hays Co, TX), Capt. J. H. Brown.
[NOTE: I have also seen her name given as "Lucretia Sabina Tilden"; in
any case, she was my gg-grandmother by her first husband. They traveled
to Texas by covered wagon in the late 1870s, but did not stay long.
They divorced and left Texas in opposite directions. However, one
daughter, Marietta Elizabeth Dornton (1868-1924), stayed, married (1883)
Charles Blount Griffin (1854-1938), had 17 children, and died and is
buried in Hays Co, Texas.]
