Hi Janet - My name is Jim Hale. My Mother was a Tipton descended from "Fighting Billy" among others. We found his grave on a trip to Tennessee in 2001.
We were directed there by Ms. Margaret Rhyme whom we visited in Maryville. My cousin Charles Tipton directed us there. She is a fountain of information on the Tiptons.
As I recall, we headed N. from Maryville on Hwy 129. The notes I took say "Look for a large flea market on the right. Go past it and then stop at the 'David D.' house sitting on a slight rise on the left of the hwy."
No one was at home so we walked behind the house and took a trail heading for the river. After passing a fork in the trail, we climbed a hill overlooking the river. Upon reaching the top, we saw two grave markers on the left, just on the other side of a fence. One was Billy's grave and the other was his son, who, according to the story, was killed defending his wife's honor.
I believe I have some pictures we took, but am at a slight advantage since the wife, who is the picture archiver, is out of town for the weekend.
If I find them, I'll let you know.
Let me know if you're interested.
Jim Hale
