Robin replies to Bob Gillis:
It depends on where and how you have obtained the row and plot number. I
feel that both of us are right here. The information may have come from a
cemetry map, an undertakers records, or from visiting the grave-site and
noting its location. Many UK cemetries do not have any marked coordinate
system and many reference schemes have been used over the ages so there may
be some doubt about the location. If you have the row and plot number in
the place detail in a consistent format then in a List of Events reports
for Burials you can access this information and may be able to sort on it
to get the result that you want. (The List of People report cannot access
(V.4) the Burial group information - therefore there is no one-pass
solution to getting a birth-date on the same line of a report as the
burial-date. )
Now returning to the Place Detail field - sorting is done via a
character-based comparison, so for the sorting proposed to work, the place
detail must be aligned exactly. Remember for example, the recent problem
in VCF with respect to families of 10 or more children. hence, for numeric
comparisons of row and plot numbers to work, they must be in the same
postions from the start of the entry and _leading zeros_ must be inserted
so that all numbers of one type have the same number of digits.
May be this is a case where we should ask BobV to split the Place Detail
into parts (like the memo with '||' ) to give us [PD1], ...[PD9] as
discrete fields for this kind of sorting and reporting? Another solution
may become available in V.5 but either way it is not easy to achieve within
V.4.
