To get real quote marks and apostrophes in HTML, open the HTML
document in Notepad or your favorite HTML editor and do a search and
replace. Don't do it globally or you'll regret it, since of course you want
both opening and closing quotes. If I remember correctly, the code is &#147
and &#148 for double quotes and &#146 for apostrophes. It is slightly
tedious but I think worth it unless you update your page constantly. I also
usually code for n-dashes and m-dashes and for all the diacriticals (though
I think TMG does the diacriticals on its own if you've entered them there).
Note: Netscape and IE permit you to leave out the # sign but I don't
recommend it because I found that the Mac AOL browser wouldn't handle the
codes properly without it. (In fact, the Mac AOL browser interprets a lot of
things strangely--ran into this when I made a basic web page for someone who
used the Mac AOL browser and it turned out to be a project from hell!)

Some of the HTML books have good lists of codes for this kind of
thing. I use Liz Castro's book on HTML (Peachpit Press) but think the first
edition has a better list than the second edition.

Subject: TMG-L: curly quote marks

How can I get TMG to use typographers' quote marks (i.e. curly
quotes)
when I'm entering stuff via the keyboard, instead of the straight up
and
down "inch" marks that are the default? I'd like them to show up in
HTML
reports as well as in Word documents.
