Most HP scanners come with the basic scanning software. After the
document/photo is scanned, you then have the option to save the image to
different sorts of files. If, in the drop-down menu, you select "Image
file", then from the next drop down menu (at bottom of that box in the
"save as" option) you may select ".jpg", ".bmp" or other formats.

There really is no need, (if you have this same or similar basic scanning
software - <g>) to bother with Adobe, whose format, .pdd, is not supported
by most other programs.
