Subject: TMG-L: how to cite microfilmed church documents
Date: Tue, 07 Mar 2000 17:07:13 -0500

I know that when you cite a source found on microfilm that you
cite it fully and then add the microfilm citation.

My problem is that I am not sure how to cite some church
records. There is no title on the book I'm using, except a
notation inside that it is baptisms and marriages spanning
particular years. I do know what city the records are
for.

The FHL cites the whole work as something like:
"Church Records 1650 - 1817." But that encompasses
several volumes over 2 microfilms. I am currently
using volume 907. These two films do not contain
over 900 volumes of these records.

I really want to do this correctly because if I ever publish
my work these records will be included. I know that if
someone wants to check my work they are more likely
going to go to the FHL for the microfilm than to the
archive in the Netherlands where these records were
filmed.

Should I use the FHL title?
Church Records 1650-1817, vol. 907, pg. 38

Or should I cobble together a new title for each volume
I end up using depending on what is written on the book?

Births 1773-1811; Baptisms 1775-1820, vol. 907, pg. 38

Or make a title using both?

Church Records 1650-1817: Births 1773-1811;
Baptisms 1775-1820, vol. 907, pg. 38

Thanks,

Leslie
