Subject: TMG-L: another comma problem

I too would put a comma after the mother's name. The Chicago Manual and
Strunk and White are still used in 2000, and I would try them on any style
question that isn't specifically genealogical (you know where to go for
those!).
When I took copyediting classes, there was mention that style is becoming
more "open" (fewer commas), but the example below would not have been
considered suitable. I tend to go by a combination of grammar and whether
one would naturally pause at a certain point in speaking.

When I took English composition 101 in 19xx, we would definitely have put
another comma after the mother's last name, however hopelessly long it may
have been. I forget the rule, but the principle was definitely drummed
into
me.
Anybody disagree? Suggestions?
What is a good, modern (post-19xx) standard english style manuel that
answers this sort of question?
TIA, again. (Note the comma after TIA!) John
