In Norway they used patronymics until it got so confusing the government
stepped in and told them to pick a surname and use it. People then
started using hyphenated names which was fine for one generation. When
a child with the surname like Horda-Hauge got married some would drop
the Horda and some would drop the Hauge. Once again the government told
the citizens to stop creating confusion and outlawed hyphenated names.
Now couples in Norway will use the wife's surname for some children and
the husband's surname for others, creating more confusion. Will the
government of Norway stop this as well or will they just assign everyone
an identification number at birth like this country has?

Thank you very much,
