I assume you're talking about FTM's rather nasty habit of taking over the
file association for a GEDCOM file? Even if you edit it, FTM takes it back
over the next time it's run. There's no way to stop it from associating it
with the 'Open' action for file type ".ged". However, there is a work-around.

Open an explorer window. Double clicking on 'My Computer' will do. Then
go to View|Folder Options and click on the 'File Types' tab. Find
GEnealogical Data COMMunication in the list. Click the 'Edit'
button. This will pop up a window which shows at least one action,
probably 'Open'.

Click the 'New' button on this window. In the Action: box, give it some
name other than Open, say NewOpen. In the Application used to perform this
action: box, enter the path of the application you want to use. (Mine is
set to notepad.exe.) Now, with this action highlighted, click the 'Set
Default' button. That way, when you click on the icon for a gedcom file,
the NewOpen action will be performed. FTM can then take over the 'Open'
action all it wants; it won't be the action performed when you click on a
gedcom file.

As to getting the pictures out of FTM, someone more familiar with the
program will have to answer. However, you might try opening the picture
up, selecting it and seeing if FTM will allow you to copy it and then paste
into, say, paint.
